This Wednesday the Parish Council met to make a final decision on sixth grade at Sacred Heart Area School. The decision made was in alignment with the Total Board’s to continue with sixth grade, discontinuing it as of May 31, 2014. With a heavy heart, I whole heartedly agree with their decision, based on all the information collected. This was a difficult, but well studied and thought out decision. On the bright side, our families have been given two years to prepare themselves for this change. This year’s 3rd and 4th graders will be graduating from Sacred Heart Area School together in May of 2014.

Next year’s 4th grade teacher will be Mrs. Trout. This will be a great match for this gifted group of students, as Mrs. Trout has been teaching at the higher 5th and 6th grade levels for many years. She is a loving, and nurturing teacher with 26 years teaching experience and dedication to our school.

As we have been discussing throughout the year, 5th and 6th grade will be combined for the next two years. Mrs. Odden will be the 5th/6th grade teacher next year. Mrs. Odden has had experience teaching various grade levels from Kindergarten – 5th grade and is very familiar with combined classes from teaching at Christ the King in Browerville, where they have had much success with combination classes. Math and reading will be taught in the morning at each grade level. From 11:30-1:40 these two grade levels will not be together because of differences in the scheduling of specials with the public schools. Afterwards they will be reunited for the remainder of the day.

Although the remainder of the teachers will be at the same grade level next year, they too may be asked to change grade levels in future years out of necessity or to change things up. We are very grateful to both Mrs. Trout and Mrs. Odden for taking on their new ventures and challenges.

I am excited about the future of our school and very pleased with the people we have in place to mold our children into happy, successful, spiritually complete individuals. Together with the help of you parents, our children’s future is very bright. God bless!

This year’s theme for Sacred Heart Area School’s Spring Blast Dinner and Auction was “Hollywood; A Night on the Red Carpet”. The event included a stretched limo, red carpet, giant Oscar statues, and other Hollywood dazzle inside and in front of the school. The 230 attendees had the opportunity to enjoy dinner provided by Detloff Custom Catering and beverages provided by the joint efforts of The Liquor Depot and the Knights of Columbus. There were nearly 300 silent and live auction items up for bid, donated by generous businesses and individuals from the Staples-Motley community and Sacred Heart Area School Alumni. This is the largest fundraising event of the year for Sacred Heart Area School averaging $36,000 in net profits for the continued operation of the school. “The greatest attribute to the success of this event, is a loving community of disciples that believe in our mission and want to see it continue.” Says Principal Jim Opelia. “We are very grateful!”

This is a great spring for you and your children to observe the heavens with a telescope, binoculars, or the naked eye. This past month, from a half hour after sunset until bedtime, you have been able to see 3 planets close up. To the east, high in the sky, you can see an orange colored star-like point of light, which is actually the planet Mars. During this month of March, it is the closest it will be to Earth for another 26 months. High in the western sky, you can see the brightest planet, Venus, with a not as bright Jupiter just below it. They are a treat to view through a telescope, but can just as well be enjoyed by the naked eye. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy this unusual lineup with your children, but do it soon. In a few weeks the longer days and planets motions will change our vantage point. Encourage your children to bring their stories of what they have seen back to school with them. Good night!

The season of Lent is a great time to reflect on strengthening our relationship with God. If we work at it together, it should also strengthen our relationships with each other, in our families and our friendships. To be the best we can at anything, we need to have faith that God will help us, and knowledge, discipline, and morals in making the right choices, taking the right path, and using our gifts. The many vices we battle each day, otherwise known as the seven deadly sins; wrath (acting out in anger), greed (excessive desires to possess), sloth (laziness and neglecting to care about what we should do), pride (inflated sense of one’s self), envy (resentful emotion from desiring what others have), lust (fantasizing about desires we shouldn’t desire), and gluttony (over indulgence) can damage or destroy our relations with God and others. Broken marriages, destroyed careers, and the absence of peace in our souls is the wreckage left behind. Reflecting on these seven “gifts of the devil”, we can see the role they have played in destroying many cherished relations in our lives. However, by instead embracing the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit; wisdom (finding God in all things and appreciating the dignity of others), understanding (to comprehend how we need to live), counsel/right judgment (knowing right from wrong), fortitude (courage to do and stand up for what is right), knowledge (understanding the meaning of God), piety (pay duty and worship to God with humility, trust, and love), and fear of the Lord (wonder and awe), we have a great deal of hope for a bright future. During these last weeks of Lent and beyond, seeking help from the Holy Spirit, work closely with your families to make them stronger than ever. Our families are worth it! This is what we embrace here at Sacred Heart Area School, instilling these truths in each other as we share our lives together. With Christ at the center of our lives, we can build foundations for a lifetime of fulfillment, happiness, and success. God bless you and your family.

The front sidewalk at Sacred Heart Area School has become increasingly rugged this winter. Thanks to Larry Odden and John Reese of the Knights of Columbus,, it has been repaired. Plans have been made to completely replace the old sidewalk from the street corner by the school, past the rectory and up to the new sidewalk by the church. The Knights of Columbus again plan on doing the work voluntarily. It is important that our school family recognize the great people behind the scenes that do so much for us. God bless the Knights!

This past year, our teachers have been studying and comparing the Minnesota Academic Standards for math and language arts, and more recently in science, to the standards of the St. Cloud Diocese. Although many similarities were found, the more recently revised Minnesota Standards seemed superior in many ways. They were more up-to-date with the latest trends in education, more integrated across subjects, and challenged students to think more critically and creatively. They also fit well into our curriculum. The recently adopted Minnesota science standards also incorporate a new category. In addition to Earth and Space, Life, and Physical, the category, or strand, called the Nature of Science and Engineering was added, which is oriented to developing careers. Not to many years ago, our Diocesan Standards, adopted in 2001, were the superior standards. We will certainly keep our religion standards from the diocese, but for now we are planning on officially adopting the Minnesota Standards for language arts, math, science, and social studies for the 2012-2013 school year. Be sure of this, that this does not change our identity as a faith based Catholic school. Most schools in the diocese are considering or have switched over to the Minnesota Standards to various degrees. We want parents to have the opportunity to address any thoughts or concerns before we do so. Please share with us any likes, dislikes or uncertainties that you may have, before we go forward with this formal adoption. Our world is changing quickly with so many rapid advances. It only makes sense that the standards we set for our children change to meet the changes of their world.
