By a stroke of good fortune, we held our Triple A display and performances right before the school closure.  Everyone that participated worked very hard on their projects or performances, and likely learned something new from the experience.

Catholic Schools Week

About a week ago, we concluded another successful and enjoyable Catholic Schools Week.  Each day had a distinct theme and a unique activity, with the crazy hair day and senior day being the most popular.  Besides attending mass and eating chocolate cookies with the 3 graduating seniors from Staples-Motley High School, our students had the chance to play various games with them to see which one earned bragging rights!

Long History of Service

A big part of every SHAS Veteran’s Day program is recognizing and honoring our veterans of the armed services.  We show our gratitude through our patriotic songs and our building displays.  This year, we featured a “Wall of Honor” that recognized veterans from our school family.  We were also fortunate to have returning alumni, Rhonda Reichel, speak about her career in the Air Force.

2019 Work-a-thon

Posted on Nov 8, 2019 in SHAS NEWS | No Comments

Recently our older students earned their Work-a-thon pledges by raking leaves and uncovering grave markers at the Evergreen Hill cemetery in Staples.  This year, rather than riding a school bus, our students got to experience a hay ride on the way to the cemetery.  Our Kindergarten and preschool students earned their pledges by picking up trash on the playground and around the school buildings.  It was a crisp fall day but everyone enjoyed contributing to this very worthwhile community service project.  Thanks to everyone that participated or pledged their support!

All School Field Trip

On May 29th, all SHAS students and several parents went to Paul Bunyanland near Brainerd for the all school field trip.  We were the only school in the park that day, so the students could try as many different rides as they wanted without waiting in long lines.  It was a beautiful late spring day and everyone had a great time!

Despite our Catholic Schools Week being delayed for a week, it was definitely worth the wait.  Each day had a different dress up theme and special classroom and group activities.  The highlight of the week was having graduating seniors that are former SHAS alumni come over to compete in various games with current SHAS students.

Honoring Our Veterans

During our recent Veteran’s Day program, each class demonstrated their respect for past and present veterans by learning about each branch of the armed services and their individual service songs.  The students and invited guests were also treated to an excellent speech by Jim Vollegraaf describing his experiences in basic training in the 1960’s.  Mr. Vollegraaf masterfully connected his military team building exercises with student classroom interactions.  At a solemn closing to our program, our very own music teacher, Michael Rohr, provided a wonderful rendition of TAPS.

All Saints Day

For All Saints Day, students had the opportunity to learn about and dress up as their favorite saint.  Every student in the 4th and 5th grade participated, and the procession before mass was well received by the parishioners.

On Wednesday, October 17th, SHAS K-5 students earned their Work-athon pledges by raking leaves and uncovering obscured grave markers at the Staples cemetery.  The preschool students earned their pledges by raking leaves and tidying up around the school grounds.  It was a crisp sunny day and everyone enjoyed contributing to a very worthy community service project.  Thanks to everyone that participated or pledge support!
