Annual Events and Activities:


Back to School Picnic/Open House: Annually held the week before school starts,   to welcome new and returning students, families at SHAS.


Grandparents Day/Book Fair: This combined event. Grandparents and parents are invited to join the students for Mass followed by a celebration at school.


Marathon: This is the school’s first major fundraiser of the year, which is held the first Saturday morning in October. Students solicit pledges prior to event and bike/walk . Parents/guardians and students meet at the school and bike to a farm NW of town or walk/bike to Lakewood Park. Hot cocoa is served and students can enjoy the playground before returning to the school for lunch served by staff, sponsored by Knights of Columbus. Students have the opportunity to win individual and school wide prizes. Our goal is to raise $10,000.


Fall Dinner: SHAS students and staff support Sacred Heart Church and St. Michaels Church by attending Fall Dinners and/or helping serve lunch.


Veteran’s Day Program: Family members, public and invited and recognized to salute and honor retired and active service men and woman on Veteran’s Day at the school. Students perform and sing and a guest speaker will address the audience.


Knights of Columbus Calendar Raffle: The Knights of Columbus Council 1801 annually create a Sacred Heart Area School Calendar / Raffle to be sold by the students.  The majority of the profits are then donated to the continued operation of the school.


Advent Season: SHAS students gather together each week during Advent to learn and celebrate this season.


Craft/Bake Sale: SHAS staff arranges this extra fundraiser for our school. Parents donate baked goods and consigners rent spaces.


Christmas Program: Grades 1-6 perform in an afternoon and evening program at church. Pre-school and Kindergarten students also perform in the evening program. Family and community members are invited and refreshments and cookies are served afterwards in the church basement.


Carnival: This is the school’s second major fundraiser. The public is invited, and students and families are expected to participate the day of the carnival. This event is annually held in February, at the school, following a themed dinner at church. Students are required to sell 200 carnival raffle tickets at $1 each. The top three students who sell the most tickets are rewarded with scrip money or a prize designated by the carnival committee. Each student is required to bring 2 cakes, baked goods, 10 grab bags and 5 Bingo prizes, (gently used or new items.) Parents, students and staff volunteer to help with games, concessions and bake sale. Some of the fun activities are as follows: cake walk, minnow races, PLINKO, BINGO, face painting, grab bags, etc… Tickets are purchased to participate in these games. At the end, the drawing is held, with approximately 1,000 cash prizes, gift certificates, etc… Goal is to raise $30,000.


Catholic Schools Week: Kick-off Catholic Schools Week with Mass at Sacred Heart and St. Michael’s with meals following. Themed days filled with fun activities including dress up days at school, money or supply drives for charities, card decorating, thank you cards, Knowledge Bowl, book drive, tractor pull, ice cream social. A press release is submitted to the local newspaper.


Lenten Season: SHAS students and staff gather together weekly to learn and reflect on the Lenten season.


Spring Blast: This is the school’s third major fundraiser. Parents, volunteers and alumni decorate and set-up school for evening dinner with live and silent auction, and to play games of chance. Goal is to raise $40,000.


Preschool-Kindergarten Round-Up: Welcome families with pre-schoolers and upcoming Kindergarten students to visit and gather information on our school and the programs we offer and ask them to join our Sacred Heart family.


Triple A/Book Fair: Arts, Academics and Awards is held in conjunction with a spring book fair. Students participate in their choice of activities by creating and displaying art projects, demonstrating academics, or performing for the students, staff and families of the community.


End of School Picnic and Kindergarten Graduation: Celebrate the last day of school with Mass and a picnic immediately following with students, staff, friends and family. Congratulate the kindergarten class as they perform a play and receive their graduation certificate.


Popcorn in the Park: Students sell popcorn during a summer concert series in the Great Northern Park held on Sunday evenings in July and part of August.


Rail Road Days Garage Sale: The annual Rail Road Days Garage Sale is a success due to the efforts of dedicated families, staff, church members, public and alumni. The 2 or 3 day sale is held at the school and also the parking lot to the south during Rail Road Days, the last weekend in August. Public donations are accepted. Volunteers are asked to set-up and work. All proceeds from the sale are donated to SHAS. Goal is to raise $5,000. 2011 chair or co-chairs is/are:


Rail Road Days Games: Staff and students offer games near Rail Road Day activities that are used during the Carnival Fundraiser, to raise money for the school.


Rail Road Days Parade: Staff and students plan, create and participate in sponsoring a float in the annual Rail Road Days Parade to promote the school.



Other Events and Activities:


Community Dance: This is a fun event for students held a few times a year, which raises funds for purchasing technology, pays for field trips, etc… for our school. Public school students and the community are invited.  Concessions are sold at the dance, including popcorn and pizza.


Public Preschool Round-Up: This is a bi-annual event that is combined with the Staples community and is held at Centennial Auditorium. This event is sponsored by the MOMS Club.
