To Kiss a Pig

Posted by: on Feb 18, 2015 in SHAS NEWS | No Comments

The SHAS school families reached several goals for the carnival raffle this year.  The highlight for the kids was to reach $16,000 to have Mr. Opelia (Mr. O.) kiss a pig.  After raising $16,800 the long wait was finally over as of Wednesday, February 18th at 2:45pm.  It took a little cuddle time, but the pig finally let Mr. O give him a big smack on the wet nose.  All the school children got to watch.  Everyone left happy, back to school work or back to the farm.  The next big carnival incentive was the overnight slumber party and dance, which will take place on April 24th.

I Love to Read Month

Posted by: on Feb 13, 2015 in SHAS NEWS | No Comments

For the remaining next few weeks, through Dr. Suess Week (first week of March), we will be celebrating “I Love to Read Month” with fun themes and activities to do at home and at school.  Please accept the challenges that have been set for your child’s reading and have fun with them.  One fun reading activity at home may be to read to your pet.  Dogs especially love to be talked to, or read to.  They don’t even mind a few mistakes.  If your child reads to the family dog or other pet, it would be beneficial to all.  Be sure the over active dog has a chance to burn some energy beforehand so they aren’t continually trying to chew the book.  The goal of I Love to Read Month is to inspire students to actively enjoy reading.  Together, we can light the spark.  Reading is one of the most important things a student will do and needs to find success with.dog_reading

Monday was Super Hero Day with a Minute to Win-it competition for the kids. Tuesday was Camouflage Day where we especially remembered prayer in our daily lives, received an extra afternoon recess and drank hot cocoa. Wednesday was Pajama Day where we especially remembered to take the time to read for enjoyment.  Today was Sunglasses Day with our all school Mass, and the staff shared in a potluck lunch together.  Tomorrow we will wrap up the week with a fun Mismatch dress up day with a popcorn and movie at the end of the day.
