What a Blast

Our 10th annual dinner/auction event, Spring Blast 2013 “Las Vegas Getaway” was a huge success.  Everything went very smooth, thanks to many volunteers, donors, and attendees and well thought out planning by this year’s committee.  The games/raffles were extra fun, the dinner was great (Ted n’ Gen’s), and the refreshments cool and tasteful (Knights of Columbus/Liquor Depot).  Many thanks to all parents who contributed in any fashion!  The highlight of the event for SHAS, was the special project donation request, where over 40 attendees stood up to pledge $100-$500 toward our new front entrance, raising $5,575 for this $8,000 project.  Special thanks to; parent volunteers, the Knights, MC’s- Bryan Winkels and Curt McIlravy, auctioneer- Walt Trantina, spring blast committee chair- Missie Daniel’s, and most of all the school secretary- Sandy Becker, who we depended on so much the past six weeks to make it happen.

The SHAS 5th and 6th graders are currently working on the strand “The Nature of Science and Engineering” from the Minnesota Academic Standards in Science.  The students are attempting to engineer the most effective balloon rocket, by continually making tests and modifications, on various designs they have created.  They are coming up with some great innovations, including a double balloon engine for increased thrust, use of materials creating less friction, and best balloon shape for less drag.  Engineering takes teamwork, patience, and the need to think critically and outside the box.  This unit follows the unit on Newton’s Laws of Motion.  science exp
